Amazon and Ethics
Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer and is reported to be a trillion-dollar
company. Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO is said to be the wealthiest man alive with a
net worth of $160 billion. However, Jeff Bezos’s business success is tainted by his
poor reputation. His business practices have been making enemies of the countries
in which he operates due to tax avoidance, and of his employees due to treating
them poorly and until recently paying below the living wage.
Amazon is one of many large corporations who practise tax avoidance in countries
where they operate. Tax avoidance is not illegal, but many consider it to be
unethical. In 2016, in the UK, Amazon earned £24 million which then soared to £72
million in 2017, but only paid £7.4 million in tax in 2016 and then incredibly, despite
the enormous increase in profits, paid £4.6 million in 2017. Amazon has come under
attack for tax avoidance from both sides of the political spectrum with criticism from
politicians such as Jeremy Corbyn and Donald Trump.
